Telespike is a complete, all-in-one data acquisition telemetry system used to record the neural activity of mid- to large-sized animal with unrestricted movement.

 

 

An extremely lightweight mini-preamplifier connects to the electrode array and immediately amplifies the desired signals, and transmits these signals to a small backpack unit that digitizes the signal and powers the transmitter.

 

 

The system digitally streams 8 or 16 channels of spike and LFP data while the animal is free to move around in an open environment. A receiver, which can be up to 3 meters (9.8 ft) away, transmits the signal via USB to the recording computer, where easy-to-use, flexible software allows complete access to the data.

With the Telespike’s compact, flexible design and advanced hardware components, obtaining reliable recordings from free-moving animals has never been easier.

 

 

Optimized Hardware For Unrestricted Movement

 

 

Unrestricted movement. A wireless signal means the animal is free to move around the experimental area without restrictions. It’s no longer necessary to deal with issues related to tethered setups, such as entanglement, modified behavior, restricted pathways, and wire degradation from animal chewing.

Lightweight transmitter. An extremely light, 1g preamp rests on the animals head to immediately amplify the signal, while a lightweight 35g backpack powers the unit and transmits the data wirelessly. A variety of jacket options are available to secure the transmitter while ensuring complete maneuverability of the animal.

Long transmission range. A 3m (9.8 ft) signal range ensures reliable and complete recordings from anywhere in the recording room.

Long battery life. A 3.5 hour battery comes standard with the system. External battery options are available to meet the demands of longer experiments.

Rechargeable battery. A rechargeable battery makes it easy to quickly begin another trial. The battery charges in under 2 hours, making it easy to run several trials in the same day. Additionally, multiple transmitters can be continuously swapped to allow for back-to-back recording sessions.

Signal strength monitor. The software displays the wireless signal strength, making it easy test the animal movement range and optimize the experimental setup.

 

 

User-Friendly, Flexible Software

 

 

User-friendly software. The Telespike software was designed with the user in mind. Researchers can quickly and easily navigate through the software options and configure experimental parameters in seconds while all the desired signal data is conveniently and continuously displayed on screen.  

Battery indicator. It’s simple to keep track of the remaining battery life in the wireless transmitter. An onscreendisplay tracks the remaining battery life of the unit and prompts a warning message when the battery is low. 

Customizable workspace. The Telespike software is designed to give the user complete control over what is viewed on screen. Modify and save workspace configurations to match the needs of each experiment.

Online statistics. Access and view online statistical tools, such as peri-stimulus histograms, evoked potential, sorted evoked potentials, sorted rastergrams, raster, ISI histograms, and firing rate tachograms.

Replay data. Recorded data can be opened and replayed on-screen. Additionally, the researcher can toggle between different playback speeds as the recording progresses. 

 

 

Complete Experimental Control

 

 

Complete workstation. Despite its compact size, the Telespike is a full data acquisition system, allowing researchers to record 8 or 16 spike and LFP channels simultaneously. Additionally, analog and digital inputs allow the user to display, record, and synchronize other signals as well, making the Telespike a complete microelectrode recording workstation.

8 or 16 channels. The Telespike is available in 8 or 16 channel systems. Each channel can optionally record local field potential in addition to the spike channels.

Analog and digital inputs. The system includes 4 analog inputs and 16 digital inputs, read as either as a whole word or as individual bits, and displays and records these inputs, making it easy to synchronize the system with behavioral data or video tracking systems.

Save disk space. Choose to save or not to save any of the following signals for each channel: continuous spike, continuous LFP, segmented spike waveforms, analog inputs, and digital inputs. Or save trials based on a digital trigger to ensure only the target data is saved.

Audio options. Researchers can listen to the audio of one continuous analog channel, either during acquisition or while replaying recorded data.

Easy to setup. The Telespike system is easy to setup. Simply connect the USB cable and power cord to the receiver and open the software to begin the experiment. It’s simple to move the system to different recording areas as needed.

 

 

Exceptional Versatility

 

 

Compatible with most animal types. The lightweight transmitter is ideal for use with rats and other animals of a similar size. Additionally, custom designs are available to secure the transmitter in larger animal applications.

Compatible with most arrays. The Telespike mini preamplifier connects with a standard omnetics connector, making it simple to connect to most arrays on the market. Additionally, Alpha Omega can manufacture custom microelectrode and microwire arrays to meet the needs of almost any experiment.

Open file format. Files are easily converted to other file formats, including text, matlab, Plexon, CED, and wavefile for post-experiment analysis.

Adjustable transmission bands. The Telespike was designed to allow multiple systems to be used simultaneously in the same area. The user can select the transmission frequency to ensure each system is transmitting on a different band.

Simple, compact design. The receiver unit’s compact size and USB connectivity makes it simple to set up the system in a variety of recording areas without the needfor rack space.
